About JBSE Consulting Engineers

An independent mechanical and electrical building services consultancy, backed by more than twenty years' experience in M&E and building services engineering.

Our story

Founded on twenty years of M&E and building services experience

JBSE Consulting Engineers Ltd was founded by Jonathan Baron, who began his career on the tools with a time-served, practical electrical background. Those early years were spent installing, testing and commissioning the systems that later appeared on his drawing boards — learning first-hand how buildings actually go together, and where designs tend to come unstuck once they reach site.

That grounding led into consultancy, where the same systems were approached from the design side: load assessments, distribution strategies, ventilation and heating design, drainage, compliance and the coordination that ties them all together. Twenty years across both sides of the industry built a rounded view of building services engineering — the standards and the calculations, alongside the sequencing, access and buildability that determine whether a design can be delivered.

JBSE was established to bring those two perspectives together in one independent practice: detailed engineering knowledge paired with real-world construction experience, applied to mechanical and electrical design, technical advice and project support across a wide range of building and infrastructure projects. The business is new; the experience behind it is not.

What makes us different

Engineering knowledge, with the site experience behind it

Plenty of consultancies can produce a compliant design. The difference here is a time-served electrical background gained before moving into consultancy — so the design is tested against how it will actually be installed, not only against the regulations it has to satisfy.

Buildable, compliant designs

Designs that satisfy the governing standards and can be installed as drawn — routes, plant space, access and tolerances resolved before the package is issued.

Real-world construction insight

Years spent installing and commissioning building services inform every drawing, so the detail reflects how the work is genuinely carried out on site.

Early risk identification

Clashes, capacity shortfalls and compliance gaps are picked up at design stage, where resolving them costs hours rather than weeks of programme.

Clear, commercially focused advice

Technical advice framed around cost, programme and risk, given in plain terms so clients and contractors can make decisions quickly and confidently.

How we work

Our approach

Building services rarely fail on a single decision — they fail on coordination, assumptions and detail left unresolved. The working method is built around closing those gaps early.

  • Collaborative by default

Working alongside architects, structural engineers, contractors and client teams from the outset, so the services strategy develops with the building rather than being fitted around it afterwards.

  • Standards-led

Electrical design to BS 7671 and the relevant BS EN standards, mechanical and public health design to CIBSE guidance and the Building Regulations, with DNO and manufacturer requirements coordinated alongside.

  • Commercially aware

Specifications and design decisions weighed against capital cost, running cost and programme, with the reasoning explained rather than buried in a report.

  • Support across RIBA Stages 0–7

Involvement from strategic definition and concept design through technical design and tender information, into construction-stage support, handover and use.
