Charging infrastructure designed from the supply inwards

JBSE Consulting Engineers provides the electrical engineering behind EV and eHGV charging projects — workplace and commercial car parks, fleet and logistics depots, residential developments and high-power charging hubs. The work starts where the project's real constraint usually sits: the available supply capacity, the assessed load and what the network can actually deliver.

From there the design develops through distribution strategy, charger selection and protection, cable sizing, containment and earthing, into tender documentation and construction-stage support. Charging installations run at sustained high load in ways general building services do not, so grouped cable routes, buried ducts, voltage drop and continuous rating are engineered rather than assumed.

Charging infrastructure also carries safety considerations that sit outside routine electrical design — PEN-fault protection for equipment outside the equipotential zone, and residual current protection selected with smooth DC fault currents in mind. Those are addressed as standard, and the deep electrical background behind the practice is exactly what this discipline draws on.

Charging infrastructure is designed to BS 7671, including the EV-specific provisions of Section 722, alongside the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation. Distribution network operator requirements, charging equipment manufacturer guidance and the relevant BS EN standards are coordinated into the same design. PEN-fault protection and residual current protection are assessed as standard rather than left to the installing contractor, and the electrical design is developed in step with the wider site services and civils.
